The Al Fresco Menu: Summer Dining Spots to Enjoy in London

Now that summer is finally here, we can all look forward to spending a bit more time outdoors. And what better way to pass a few sun-kissed hours than enjoying a spot of outdoor dining with friends, family or colleagues?

Whether it’s a genial picnic lunch under the shade of a tree, or a moonlit meal on a Mediterranean-inspired terrace, there is plenty to enjoy at Rathbone Square in the heart of Fitzrovia. So join us as we embrace all things al fresco, and set the menu for summer in the city!

What is al fresco dining?

Al fresco dining, an Italian phrase meaning "in the fresh air," refers to the practice of eating outside.

This dining style has become popular for its relaxed and casual ambience, allowing diners to enjoy their meals while taking in the natural surroundings. Typically associated with the warmer months, al fresco dining can range from picnics in the park to sophisticated restaurants with outdoor terraces.

Al fresco dining can trace its roots back to ancient Rome where feasts and social gatherings were often held in open-air courtyards and gardens. During the Renaissance, the tradition continued, particularly in Italy and France, where outdoor dining became a staple of the elite. Over time, this enjoyable experience spread throughout Europe and eventually worldwide, becoming a cherished summertime activity.

One reason for the popularity of al fresco dining has to be the unique experience it offers. Eating outdoors combines the pleasure of good food, with the benefits of fresh air and natural light.

Dining al fresco offers a more relaxed and informal setting compared to indoor dining, making it ideal for leisurely lunches, romantic dinners, or social gatherings with friends and family.

The draw of al fresco dining in Rathbone Square

Nestled in the heart of Fitzrovia in London’s West End, retail, residential and office hub Rathbone Square sits within its own lush planted landscape.

The award-winning public garden square covers 1,800 square metres, and sets a calm, secluded scene with its central lawn surrounded by Gingko, Gleditsia, cherry and magnolia trees. Raised planters create integrated benches which sit alongside traditional deckchairs.

A serene escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, Rathbone Square provides the perfect place for al fresco dining, with a variety of eateries offering outdoor seating, or takeaways to enjoy in the square’s gardens.

The opportunity to delight in a meal surrounded by nature whilst still being in the heart of the West End is something truly special. So, let’s take a look at a few places to enjoy a variety of al fresco menus this summer!

Circolo Popolare

Circolo Popolare has to be one of London’s most Instagrammable restaurants, offering a genuinely memorable experience and a tempting taste of Sicilian cuisine.

With a seasonal chef’s menu showcasing dishes such as creamy Truffle Pizza, syrup-loaded Ricotta pancakes, XXL zingy lemon pie and ‘La Gran Carbonara’ served from an entire wheel of pecorino cheese, it really is a special place and perfect for any occasion.

What is al fresco dining? Well Circolo Popolare sums it up with its beautiful palm-filled Mediterranean-style terrace which seats 60 outdoor diners during the warmer months.

The restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially if you want to secure your space on that al fresco terrace!

Joe & the Juice

It may not offer its own sun-drenched terrace like Circolo Popolare, but what Joe & the Juice does offer is a tantalising array of nutrient-rich juices, healthy salads, sandwiches and tempting shakes. In other words, the perfect menu for summer!

Why not grab yourself something tasty and head out into the shady gardens of Rathbone Square and find your own private al fresco dining spot? Or make plans with friends or colleagues for a convivial healthy outdoor breakfast or lunch in a cool shady spot?

From energy-boosting protein shakes and breakfast bowls, to iced summer specials like the Espresso Tonic, Matcha Tonic, Blueberry Latte or Lavender Latte, and of course the famous Joe’s Club Sandwich, there is plenty to tempt the taste buds.

Crosstown Doughnuts

Crosstown Doughnuts is well-known UK-wide for its delectable doughnuts and handcrafted cookies, all made in-house using the very best seasonal ingredients.

Again whilst it’s indoor-only seating at Crosstown Fitzrovia, there’s no reason why you can’t grab yourself a treat and head off into the gardens to indulge your sweet tooth in the pleasurable open-air surroundings.

White Pine

If you’re looking for a bite to eat that ticks all those green and animal-friendly boxes that are so important to you, head to White Pine.

This is Rathbone Square’s very own sustainable, cruelty-free boutique coffee and juice bar with a menu offering summer gems such as Icelandic style protein shakes and an array of vegan snacks, all derived from local suppliers and sold in sustainable packaging.

There’s no outdoor seating here, but takeaways are a staple, so order yourself something irresistible, then make your way into the gardens and grab yourself a spot on a bench or deckchair ready for your al fresco experience.

Omotesando Koffee

Omotesando Koffee is celebrated globally for its Japanese coffee, brewed to order right in front of your eyes by expert baristas clad in white lab coats.

Whilst again there’s no outdoor seating, there’s literally every type of take-out coffee you can think of here. And to make your takeaway-al-fresco-dining-day all the more special, why not add to your beverage with a delicious traditional Japanese pastry?
